The water system Washington State Department of Health ID number is 31569.
The water system serves all of Hartstene Pointe, but will not serve properties outside the community. The system was constructed in the early 1970’s and consists of:
- A steel storage tank that holds 188,000 gallons of water. The tank is 79 feet high.
- Two wells. Well 1 has a 6-inch casing that is 170-feet deep and pumps 75 gallons per minute (gpm). Well 2 pumps 100 gpm.
- Greensand filter. The greensand filter treats the water from Well2 to reduce the iron and manganese levels. The filter uses potassium permanganate oxidizes the iron and manganese.
- An emergency generator to operate Well 1.
The water is chlorinated for water quality, but not fluoridated. The water in Well 2 is treated for arsenic to reduce that level of substance.
The community is served by a system of 2-inch, 4-inch, and 6-inch water mains for a total of 4.4 miles of water main. Typically the water main is AC pipe.
The Water system has 25 fire hydrants, but these are not fed by 8-inch water mains. Therefore, the available fire flow through the hydrants is restricted. The local fire district has fire fighting pans to accommodate these hydrants.
Interesting Information:
- In 2009, the system produced 25,610,800 gallons of water from its two wells.
- On a hot day, the water consumption peaks on an average of 1.89. The average water production of 55,220 gallons increases to 104,366 gallons.
- Due to water pressure standards, only 12 feet of the 79 feet of water storage in the tank is considered useable.
- The water system has two pressure reducing valves to keep water pressure at an acceptable limit for those homes near sea level.
- Homes near the top of the hills have water pressures of 30 to 35 pounds.
